Pachhunga University College (PUC) is a public institution located in Aizawl, Mizoram. It is the sole constituent college of Mizoram University, a central university established by an Act of the Indian Parliament.

It is the oldest and largest college in Mizoram, both in terms of enrolment and campus size, having been founded in 1958 as Aijal College. It began with intermediate courses in the arts (equivalent to higher secondary education) and expanded to bachelor’s degrees in the arts, commerce, and sciences. It became the first postgraduate college in Mizoram when it began offering master’s degree programs in Mizo, philosophy, and life sciences.

The college is named after Pachhunga, a prominent businessman and politician who founded the college’s initial administration in 1962. It became a university college in 1979 when it was incorporated as the university’s sole constituent college. The permanent campus, which has been in operation since 1965, is located in College Veng, a neighborhood on the outskirts of Aizawl. The 138-acre campus is Aizawl’s only verdant forest reserve, dubbed the “lung of the city.”

In 1965, the Assam Government provincialized the college, renaming it Pachhunga Memorial Government College (PMG). In 1977, the college was renamed Pachhunga College. North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) adopted and upgraded it as its sole constituent college on 19 April 1979. The college was eventually renamed Pachhunga University College (PUC). In July 2001, with the establishment of Mizoram University, the entire management was transferred to the new university.

The college offers undergraduate programs in 23 areas of study, including the arts, sciences, commerce, and management. The academic program is a credit-based system that incorporates continuous assessment, periodic class tests, seminars, assignments, remedial courses, and field studies, among other components. Additionally, the college encourages student exposure through study tours both within and outside the state.

Highlights of Pachhunga University College Campus Aizawl (Mizoram)


The college complex is comprised of the Administrative Building, four Arts Blocks, a Science Block, a Life Science Block, a Physical Science Block, a Seminar Hall, a Library, two Boys’ Hostels, two Girls’ Hostels, a Playground, a Multipurpose Sports Complex, and staff quarters. A new academic cluster building is currently being constructed.


All nine science departments, including psychology, geography, and biology, have functional laboratories. The laboratories are being equipped with sophisticated instruments to enable students to conduct experiments not only at the honors level but also at the advanced level. All practical facilities have been upgraded as part of the Department of Biotechnology’s Star College Scheme and Biotechnology Hub. The same scheme is also used to renovate all practical laboratories. Additionally, a fully functional Research Center was recently established.


The college library has more than 53000 books. A wide range of encyclopedias and advanced books of knowledge provide a ready reference to hungry minds. The library at present subscribes to 42 journals and online journals (Inflibnet).


Each department separates students into small groups and assigns each group a teacher. The teacher-in-charge maintains contact with his or her group’s students, assists and guides them in their studies, personal problems, and so on, through periodic meetings.


At regular intervals, four buses transport students and faculty to and from the college. All members of the College have access to college transportation.


The College opened a playground in 2009. The playground serves not only the college community but also the surrounding community.


Two Boys’ Hostels with a combined capacity of 176 students and two Girls’ Hostels with a combined capacity of 180 students accommodate out-of-station students. Priority is given to students from rural villages when it comes to hostel placement. A new 25-bed Girls Hostel is currently being constructed.


In 2009, a Student Internet Resource Center was established. The center is open to students on all school-related days. It provides Internet access and meets all of the students’ information technology needs. Additionally, the college has a functional networking system integrated with a student database system.


Each week, qualified physicians and nurses are available for consultation at the College. They are available free of charge to all College staff and students.


Throughout the year, the College offers regular counseling in a variety of areas, including career guidance, spiritual guidance, and mental health.


Additionally, the College promotes research and development. In 2017, a distinct Research and Instrumentation Centre was established. There are up to 31 ongoing research projects across multiple departments. Additionally, the college has a Biotechnology training center called the ‘Biotechnology Hub’ that is sponsored by the New Delhi-based Department of Biotechnology. A national-level standard research laboratory has been established by the departments of Zoology, Geology, Botany, Physics, Chemistry, and Biotechnology. In 2020, the Life Sciences department will begin offering a Ph.D. program. Numerous faculty members supervise research scholars in collaboration with their parent universities, such as MZU.

UGC Community College Scheme in PU University

The College received a grant from the University Grants Commission to operate the Community College Scheme. The college offers this program as part of its curriculum.

Students’ support in the form of scholarships is available within the college. Some scholarship includes Post-Matric Tribal Scholarship in the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, GOI, UGC Ishan Uday Merit Scholarship for NE Students, Sitaram Jindal foundation scholarship for BPL Students, Departmental awards, etc.

Students’ Merit Award is given to the following categories of students.

  • Highest mark scorer in Arts, Science, and Commerce streams.
  • Toppers in the final year University examinations.


► H.K. Bawihchhuaka (founder Secretary of the College) Proficiency Award carrying a cash prize of Rs.10,000.00 with citation is given to Arts student topper in B.A. Examination

► Lenrual Hlui Science Proficiency Award carrying a cash prize of Rs.10,000.00 with citation is given to Science student topper in B.Sc. Examination sponsored by “Lenrual Hui” Alumni students of Pre-University students of 1980-83 Batch.

► Khawtinkhuma Proficiency Award carrying a cash prize of Rs. 10,000.00 with citation is given to Commerce student topper.


ZET Award: Meritorious students passing in distinction (Class12) in the Department of Physics will be sponsored by Zoram Educational Trust (ZET) @Rs1500p.m initially for the period of one semester which may be continued on the basis of their academic performance.

SEL Foundation Award: Sunflower Electronics Foundation sponsors three deserving students one each from Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry departments @ at Rs 1500 p.m. during their entire graduation period.
